We are thrilled to report on an inspiring celebration of free expression and critical thought from the state of Connecticut in which a senior from Rocky Hill High School was awarded the $1,000 first prize in the 2024 Connecticut Foundation for Open Government’s (CFOG) Forrest Palmer High School Essay Contest. The winning essay tackled a First Amendment issue involving The Satanic Temple's science-focused After School Satan Club at a public elementary school in Lebanon, Ct. The student writes, “Schools must choose to either allow all interest-based clubs to meet or none at all,” and continues on to argue, “If we expect religious freedom for ourselves, we must extend the same right to all groups, even those we disagree with.” The contest, named in honor of the late Forrest Palmer, former editor of the News-Times in Danbury, Ct, attracted a record-setting 86 entries from 14 high schools across Connecticut.
The Satanic Temple extends our congratulations to these inspiring students for their thought-provoking work.
